Heard of the Big Give and want to know a bit more about it? Well, you’ve come to the right place. This appeal is an incredible opportunity to have your donation doubled, thereby maximising your impact!
We realise you might have a lot of questions when it comes to the how's and what's of this appeal, so here's your top questions about the Big Give, answered:
The Big Give Christmas Challenge is a seven-day online match funding campaign supporting a diverse array of charities working across all charitable sectors within the UK and overseas.
Here at Tree Aid, we are delighted to have been selected to take part again in 2024.
The Christmas Challenge is a match funding appeal but it goes one step further than a typical match funding appeal. The model works on the basis that the charity collects pledges from a select group of supporters. The Big Give then works to secure additional match funding from its network. Together, all of these pledges make up the ‘match pot’. Then, during Big Give week, members of the public can donate to the appeal and have their donation matched pound for pound by the match pot.
So in our case, Tree Aid has secured £25,000 from a select group of supporters, and a further £25,000 from a funder via the Big Give - the Helen and Michael Brown Charitable Trust, meaning we have a match pot worth £50,000. When our Big Give appeal goes live on 3 December, donations of any value up to a total of £50,000 will be matched by this match pot, so that together we can raise £100,000 for communities in the drylands of Africa facing hunger and malnutrition.
Tree Aid’s Big Give Christmas Challenge Match Fund appeal will be running from the 3-10 December.
This appeal is raising unrestricted funds, meaning your support will have an incredible impact across our six project areas in Africa's drylands.
Want to know what your donation could support? Find out more about the appeal here.
You can donate through the Big Give’s online fundraising platform between 3-10 December. The link to the website can be found here.
Donations will only be accepted via debit card, credit card or Apple or Google Pay and BACS. Donations made offline (for example through cheques or CAF payments) cannot be match-funded.
If you want to donate £500 or more, donors can also choose to use the BACS donation option. Please set this up as soon as possible, as BACS payments can sometimes take time. If these BACS payment reach the Big Give after the week of the campaign, they will not be matched.
Our target is to raise £100,000 in one week. We have a small group of supporters who have pledged to support our appeal with a £25,000 donation, which means The Big Give has pledged a further £25,000 to our appeal. However, to unlock this matched giving from The Big Give we need to raise £50,000 from supporters and this brings our total fundraising appeal target to £100,000.
This appeal is being sent to a small group of donors so that you can have maximum impact with donations being matched.
The first £24,000 donated to the appeal will be matched. We can still accept donations after our target of £48,000 is reached.
If we raise more than our target, we will help more people grow trees for food and to earn an income. If we raise less than our target, we can scale back our work accordingly. The campaign fits with our overall mission - to enable people living in the drylands of Africa to unlock the potential of trees to reduce poverty and protect the environment - and as such it won't become invalid.
