Across the drylands, water shortages in the dry season mean that the land struggles to support plant life. But an innovative solution is helping to conserve water all year round — boulis.
Boulis are large pits that are dug deep into the ground and are able to hold significant amounts of water throughout the year, despite the high temperatures and limited rainfall during the dry season.
The She Grows project got underway in February 2020. The project began with a baseline survey to measure participants’ living standards. The survey focuses on indicators such as household income, fuel-wood usage, dietary diversity, use of trees and forests, natural resource management techniques and women’s decision-making powers.
Once the baseline study was completed the next phase of the project began. Ten communities are being supported to plant 5,000 seedlings during the rainy season.
