Leaves For livelihoods

£4 a month could help set up a fifty square metre plot of a nutrition garden. Every meter is packed with fast-growing tree seedlings that can produce leaves for consumption after just a few months
£7 a month could train two people how to improve the quality of their market them more effectively
£12 a month could mean two women like Alizeta can join an enterprise group and develop a profitable business. Processing tree products together as a part of a group gives women a huge income boost. In Burkina Faso, the annual average income has increased by 186% for enterprise group members.
£23 could provide a kilo of top-quality seeds that will provide a community with trees to provide food and bring the degraded land back to life.
£40 can train a woman like Alizeta in how to improve the quality of their tree products and market more effectively.
£72 could mean a woman like Alizeta can join an enterprise group and develop that enterprise to be a sustainable and profitable business.

Our privacy policy will tell you all you need to know about how we handle, store, and process your data. Tree Aid is committed to fundraising in an honest and ethical way — see our supporter promise for more details.

Donate today to grow a greener, healthier future for communities in Africa's drylands.

Tree Aid provides communities with the tools and training they need to restore their land, improve diets, and earn a sustainable income from trees.

Your support could help us to expand our work across the Sahel region, growing incomes through sustainable tree businesses and supporting thriving, healthy communities.

From this work, we can see that our future is assured. We know that the young generation, our beautiful daughters, are following in our footsteps

Roots to Market

We support entrepreneurs to grow and sell tree products from seed to sale, providing the tools and training to help sustainable community businesses really take off.

Building on people's existing skills and knowledge, local Tree Aid staff work with co-operative business groups. From tree care and product processing, to business planning and marketing, Tree Aid provides training for every stage of a tree product's journey.

We work with communities to plant and grow trees which are most useful to the people who live there. Sustainable tree products, like seeds, nuts, fruits and leaves, can be used as a source of income, and sold at local markets.

Since we have known Tree Aid, a lot of things have improved in the village. We manage the plants to feed our families, and sell fruit and powders from tree products to earn an income and help our children at school.

Women in Business

For women living in poverty, it can be hard to access the tools and training required for their business ideas to really fly.

Tree Aid projects connect with local women's enterprise groups, finding out how best we can support their existing work to make running their tree product businesses a little easier.

This might mean distributing machinery, which can save time and energy on product processing (like turning shea nuts into shea butter), or providing warehouses for storage of products throughout the year.

Leaves Mean Life

People in the drylands of Africa are being hit hardest by the effects of the climate crisis. For people living here like Doli and her family, weather patterns are becoming more erratic and droughts and floods are becoming more frequent and severe.

Finding joined-up climate solutions which address diet-related ill health, land degradation and poverty is vital. Join us as we work with local communities to grow nutritious food and incomes, training people to plant, grow, process and sell sustainable tree products.

What are nutrition gardens?

Nutrition gardens are small communal village plots dedicated to cultivating fast-growing trees that produce leaves after just 3 months, such as moringa and baobab. These trees are highly nutritious and can be used fresh or dry for consumption and sale.

This means communities can harvest stable supplies of food all year round, even when other crops fail in difficult conditions. It also makes these products more locally accessible than when only picked in the wild.

Almost all parts of the moringa tree are edible, from leaves to roots. This fast growing marvel is highly resistant to drought, and packed with essential nutrients. All of these factors make it the perfect tree for the dryland regions of Africa's Sahel.
