Why this research matters

Across the African drylands, communities play a vital role in protecting forests. But evidence comparing their governance models to other approaches is limited. This study will fill that gap and strengthen the case for policy change that benefits people, nature, and climate.

What we’re looking for

  • Comparative analysis of governance models (e.g. community-led, state-led, co-management)
  • Assessment of impacts on restoration, food security, and community wellbeing
  • Policy, legal, and customary framework review in African dryland countries
  • Clear, actionable recommendations for governments and funders

Who should apply

We welcome applications from:

  • Independent consultants or teams
  • Research institutions or agencies
  • Experts in land rights, forest governance, or community-led development

English and French fluency is required. Familiarity with African dryland countries is essential.

Timeline & Deliverables

  • Deadline for applications: 31/07/25
  • Final delivery: by February 2026 (earlier if possible)
  • Outputs include: inception plan, findings report, policy brief, and case studies
